The project: residential flat for private client
The concept for the complete fitout of a 3 bedroom (carpet area 1250 sq.ft.) flat in the northern suburbs required us to consider efficiency and cost as major factors while also providing an open and expansive feeling for the young owners. Their primary priority was an uncluttered design that provided them maximum storage and utility as well.
The strategy was to use light and neutral material palettes but also experiment with color to create subtle variations that would not be outdated or considered trendy. This would allow them to also build and add on to the design in time as they slowly started to grow as a family in their space.
The living and dining area become central to this expansive sense which we kept open and free. The bedrooms take on the maximum storage areas but allow for an elusive feeling of a larger space within the minimal footprints provided. We also refrained from using ostentatious materials in the mains spaces and adhered to usable and weatherable materials which would not require heavy maintenance. The washrooms use marble, stone, smoked glass and lighting to create a warmer and richer experience within the small spaces. The corridor that connects the bedrooms, kitchen, toilet and utility space is clad with wood to create a visually uniform transition space concealing all the electrical and MEP requirements as well.
In addition, as a practice we also see the importance of art and visually/experientially creating interest and dynamism within the project. The 2 art installations are executed by myself on site and give a special character to the project allowing the owners to feel that they have a bespoke space catering to their specific experience.
