The concept arose out of a simple question: How can design add value when considering aspects of sustainability, aesthetics and place making in the design of the store?
In terms of sustainability, we realised that every time a store closed down the new retailer would end up ripping out all the existing interiors and replacing them with their own even if the previous interior was similar to their new design. We thought this was extremely wasteful and unnecessary and we could develop a system which would allow multiple retailers to use the space over time or even remove the entire interior and shift of to another container. This was also the brief from Burgundy Hospitality as they wanted as much flexibility as possible and also a design that would represent a sense of innovation and sustainable thinking. The interior shell is comprised of laminated wood ribs and panels that can be dismantled and stored, reorganised on site or even reinstalled in another container if required with minimal waste or damage to the container itself. All wiring and furniture is also exposed or scalable which makes the design very flexible and accommodating.
The design also doesn’t attempt to cover up the elements unique to the nature of a shipping container with its maritime references. We have left much of the corrugated steel interior exposed to remind customers of the proximity of the sea around them. Their is a rawness to unit itself which exposes most of the services. We wanted to stay true to the nature of the box park inside and out as we felt it would build a holistic presence for the retail units and the public space around the jetty.
